17 weeks to go

4 03 2007

Here’s a little video from the morning. The temperature was perfect, and the cloud cover was high. We had some beautiful moments of light streaming through the trees around Deep Cove. And overall, it was a nice short easy ride. Did I mention that we got passed by two seniors on their bikes? That’s okay. We’re okay with that. Really. I mean, they were pretty fit-looking. Sorta.

(Update: Oops, there are 17 weeks, not 18, so I changed the title.)

Preparing for the next 18 weeks with “Super Dave” Norona as our coach

27 02 2007

Terry and I sat down for a personal coaching session with Dave Norona this week to discuss training plans, nutrition, race preparation, physical and mental training, and how to stay healthy between now and race day. It was a GREAT conversation at full throttle for 1.5 hours. Cramming his 18 years of training into 90 minutes wasn’t possible but we certainly got a good start.

Some ideas were surprising, others were confirmations of what Terry and I had already learned from our prior adventures. I’m feeling better now that a training plan is in place so that we can put ourselves on autopilot.

Dave is a director of the race as well and says that it is going to be “epic” with some fantastic scenery and routes.

What does the training plan look like? Well, something like the picture below. Without getting into details or sharing any of Dave’s “secret training” suggestions, we can share with you that it looks something like this. The spike at the end is the race itself:

2 mountain bikes, 7 days, 500km from Victoria to Whistler, through some of B.C.’s most beautiful scenery. Can’t wait.

This is the launch of the Team Sport Goofy blog. We will be documenting our trials and tribulations as we train for terrible torturous times ahead with smiles on our faces and mud on our calves. Thanks for reading. Please enjoy the ride.
